5 out of 5 stars Different but EXCELLENT!   June 13, 2008

This albumn is different from the usual Coldplay style.
It is following on from their X and Y albumn which did take me a while to grow on me but I love it. This albumn also goes back to the first ever albumn Parachutes. Its a mixture of the two going back but coming on forward.

Just let this albumn wash over you. Better listened to in your car or even on your blessed MP3 players!

Yes many people will review it to be different. Some people will like it some not so much. It will either grow on you, you critics out there or if you love it now then you always will.

Yes and Voilet Hill two of the best tracks.
I can't wait until December when I go to London to see them! Never seen them before live...and I got my ticket through See Tickets NOT a certain website that sells everything and allows sales of ONE ticket to go for 200 EACH!

i've been so excited about the release of this album and i certainly wasn't let down. I think coldplay have excelled theirselves with this album! I feel this is the best album they have released, vocally Chris Martin is great, the instruments are powerful and on top of their game! I listened to most of the day and just wanted to carry on listening to it. I totally recommend this album to anyone.

Coldplay at the absolute best!!!

3 out of 5 stars A review with no axe to grind   June 12, 2008

It will sell by the million, but I don't think it will become a sound track for the next 6 months for many people , like the others have been.
It has lazy rhymes, and a rather dull predictability to it, i.e. "this is what we sound like when we are trying to change".
It sounds more like a collection of B sides , or a work in Progress to me.
Coldplay have never been a cutting edge, set your pulse rating Band, lets face it.... even Colin Montgomerie raved about them !!
BUT when they have been good , they have been wonderfully good, simple songs and arrangements with killer chord changes, and a sure footedness and confidence , that you can only admire, despite their jealous , and pointless , success hating detractors.
BUT, and it's a big but, the thing is, this new CD does not deliver, it is neither a " more of the same, aren't we good at it" CD, which would still be very hard to begrudge, but sadly neither is it a new direction nor a convincing new sound, or new style.
Even the potentially wonderful addition of Brian Eno does not seem to work.

This could be labelled as their transitional difficult CD before more great stuff, or is it the start of solo projects and a long gap , and who knows what ?

2 out of 5 stars Shot down by their own high standards   June 12, 2008

It's natural for a band to evolve, to go in different directions and experiment a little. What's important is the core, the very thing that made them successful. Some bands have tried it such as U2 and Radiohead with success. Others fall by the wayside, caught up in their own self importance and over-hyped sense of grandeur.
This album is not a complete disaster. There are some high points but these, unfortunately, are out weighed by the low ones. But the problem lies with Coldplays' tremendous back catalogue to which they will always be judged and inevitably compared. Great bands are instantly recognisable because of their sound but it seems through this 'change of direction' Coldplay have lost theirs. There is nothing to compare to previous work.
On the bright side they won't fall by the wayside as Chris Martin does have the talent for the long haul and he may look back on this piece of work in a few years to come and chuckle, perhaps thinking "We tried it and it didn't quite work. What were we thinking?"
On the whole a disappointment.

I know there has been mixed reactions to this album and i dont see why!
Its brilliant and typical coldplay but with an added something....!
I have listened to it non-stop throughout the day and i love it. there isnt a single song on there that i dislike, and i especially love lost!, Lovers in Japan, Viva la Vida, Violet Hill and Strawberry swing!
Cant wait to see them live in december!
Bravo Coldplay! another stunner!
