probably weller's finest.. July 9, 2008 Anthony Duckmanton (essex UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
ive waited six weeks or so before writing this review as im often baffled why people write reviews on the basis of just a couple of plays. after playing the album a couple of times i would've probably given it 3 stars maximum but since then and every subsequent listen ive been more and more impressed with the sheer brilliance and genius of this collection. initially i, along with some of the other reviewers, thought that there were probably 4 or 5 tracks that just didnt belong on this CD and i just couldnt see the reason for them. however after countless plays it all seemed to fall into place and these so-called duff tracks started to make more sense and to fit into the whole. it is certainly weller's bravest and arguably best album in 30 years of trying. please people give this album a chance. dont listen to it once or twice and then write it off. listen over a couple of weeks or months and if your a lover of music i guarantee you'll love this as much as i do.
A real mix July 7, 2008 Steve Horsfall ( author) (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Decided to listen to this a number of times before reviewing as it was so unlike any other Paul Weller album I've heard before. The conclusion is that 22 Dreams is a diverse collection of songs that has something for everyone but I would be amazed if anyone could hold up their hand and say they loved every track. I do have to use the skip button in the car on a few tracks but it's fair to say that the songs that do hit the spot are classics - songs like Have You Made up Your Minds, Invisible and Sea Spray. Not just another album from Mr Weller but a brave and talented affair that challenges the musical senses.
Not his best, needs to be listened to a few times July 1, 2008 Mr. A. Gifford (Stoke, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not his best, but it's not as bad as some make out. There are a couple of tracks, God being the main one , that I just don't get. However in 21 tracks there will be a couple of mis hits.I saw the tour for this album and to be frank, it sounded much better live.Enjoyable, but far from his best
new direction for weller July 1, 2008 S. gould (WALES) this is an interesting album with many different styles, although i don't feel that this 'waters down' the quality of the whole. it's not all great, but it is certainly refreshing. in fact, i prefer some of the more experimental material to the traditional. i think weller should be applauded for at least trying to do something different. why does everyone hark back to the Jam and Style Council? he's done that and done it brilliantly, he doesn't need to do it all again. i can't understand why people want more of the same. the album as a whole has a certain 'feel' of its own, although at times i feel that it a bit of a jumble and a feeling that he feels he has to satisfy all of his fans at the same time. all of the best contemporary musicians and songwriters embrace many different styles and Weller has earned the right to follow his instincts. a very enjoyable album; standouts for me 'invisible', 'lite nights', 'empty ring', 'cold moments' and a few others. i am undecided on the musical interludes, some are great, some a bit weird, but hell, live with it!
great cover but not great music June 28, 2008 hagrid (uk) 1 out of 9 found this review helpful
I don't want to discuss each track as i think I would have to play the album more times than I care to, the problem is I just can't remember the songs. I loved the Style Council and everything they did , I liked a lot of the Jam's stuff and much of Weller's solo work but this album is a massive let down and I was really looking forward to hearing it on the strength of the interesting title and cover. Okay I do like the single and it's riff, its a great track but when you hear the singing on some of this album (Black Rivaaa) it is cringe making and that's being kind- it's also time to give up the ciggies as their killing your voice Paul. Maybe I'm wrong maybe I'll love this album after repeated plays,I really hope so but I doubt it. I think I'll listen to the new Coldplay record instead and a bit of Bobby Bland which I've just bought instead. I disagree with the bloke below who slags off Sandinista , now that was a brilliant album which was magnificent in its entirety and the best Clash album in my humble opinion!
