This is a very worthwhile collection of recordings by the great British Dance Bands of the period 1930-1940. These were the "pop groups" of their day - with high standards of musicianship and great interpretations of the popular songs of the day. I'm not sure how this particular selection was decided upon - it appears rather random - but there are some lovely performances.

Unfortunately the accompanying notes are not error free and contains some incredible comments such as "Similar in style and scope to (Charlie) Kunz was the band formed in 1932 by London-born Sidney Lipton". Leaving aside the inaccurate spelling of Sydney, to draw comparisons between the small band led by Kunz with the larger orchestra directed by Lipton is ill-considered at best! In the detailed track listing there are some howlers such as suggesting that Mantovani was at the Monseigneur Restaurant in 1936 when that establishment had closed down a couple of years earlier. I don't wish to spend time correcting them all but I'll just also point out that the Jack Harris Orchestra of 1938 were not at Grosvenor House, Park Lane - the then home of Sydney Lipton's Orchestra.

to hear so many of these great bands and singers on 1cd is truly amazing.you could put this disc in your player and have your own strictly come dancing show in your home.to get 75minutes of first class music for this price is a real steal. i know that there is quite a few younger people turning to ballroom dancing so maybe before too long we shall see the return of the big bands.
