Perfect traditional Christmas May 19, 2008 Mart Music (Essex, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a collection of traditional Christmas carols and music from two of today's most respected choirs - The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, and The Sixteen. These performances are subtle and restrained ones from a quiet chapel rather than a Songs of Praise edition from Westminster Abbey, so they are perfect for a quiet sit-down on Christmas Eve or calming Christmas Day morning reflection on life before the work begins. Christmas CDs are in abundance, but this one offers some lovely traditional versions of songs as they were intended to be heard. The others in the `Classic FM For' series are albums dedicated to Babies, Dinner Parties, Driving, Fitness, Mums, Romance, Studying, Weddings, so it will also appeal to those wanting to get the entire collection and build a modest library of varied classical music.
Enjoyable For The Festive Season December 21, 2006 DB Dom (London, UK) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Brilliant stuff to put on for Christmas. I was however unbelievably dissapointed when I found myself struggling to hear the carols. Not the best buy I've made, and some of the carols are very clear and good to listen to, I found that several of the carols were drounded out by the music (still good, but I bought this for the carols). Nice to listen to, now I've got it I'm not annoyed, but had I have heard this before I probably would've had second thoughts before purchasing it, still, it didn't cost much, and none of the tracks are horrible to listen to, they are all nice, just not quite what I hoped for
Not the best I'm afraid December 5, 2006 TomStir (Scotland) 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was looking forward to this one but I'm afraid (despite the time of year) I can't be too charitable about it. Carol's are all about voices and I'm afraid the quality of the voices on the recordings are just not up to scratch. It's like they recorded at the back a big echoing hall with the microphone in a goldfish bowl. A lot of the time the lyrics are a next to inaudible mush and frequently sung in such a low key and somber fashion as to render otherwise cheerful and uplifting carols into elevator music. The poor soloists are given little chance to shine either with their voices almost inaudible compared to the woolly wall of sound that accompanies them. Christmas carols should surely be sung with joy and celebration (it's for Christmas after all) and recorded with clarity to get the most from them. I've given it two stars because at least there is a large selection on the disc - I'm afraid I didn't think most of them were up to much though. Well there's my tuppence worth - there's plenty of other Christmas compilations out there. Happy listening. (or if you can't be happy have a listen to the Alfie Boe CD - bring a tear to a glass eye 5/5).
an absolute delight November 29, 2005 Mr. A. C. Gilbert (Chatel sur Rolle, Switzerland) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Pop this on your sound system when the family's round for Christmas and I guarantee a hush will descend on the gathering. This is a fantastic album, with sobre, moving renditions of our most cherished Christmas carols. No glitz, no glitter, just beautiful, timeless songs, beautifully rendered. A treasure trove for adults and children alike. This is what Christmas is about!
