Should be compulsory! October 5, 2008 Bob Monroe (Italy) This CD shows that the "sisters" are not just good at harmony but can write quality material too. Their original songs are the high spots and their words are brilliant, from the tragic And She Sang to the laugh-out-loud I Can't Believe I'm Not A Millionaire via the bitter-sweet Jilted. Furthermore the arrangements are splendid and the musicians behind them excellent. The drumming on Soho Nights raises it from just a catchy tune to a tour de force. If there has to be a weak track, for me it's It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) which seems to go on too long and try out too many styles. But this is a quibble. I can't wait for the next one!
The rise and rise of The Puppini Sisters! April 5, 2008 Purple Pug 888 (West Sussex, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the second album from that toe-tapping trio of melodious maidens, The Puppini Sisters. This album features 13 songs {three less than their debut album} comes without song words {like their debut album} and lasts 50 minutes 23 seconds {7 minutes 16 seconds longer than their debut album.} 1. SPOOKY {FAST} A 1940's drum and base cover version of Dusty Springfield's song, 2:43. 2. WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN {FAST} An amazing song with amazing Middle Eastern yodelling, 2:42. 3. OLD CAPE COD {SLOW} Chill out value in spades! 3:32. 4. SOHO NIGHTS {FAST} An original, glamorous and harmonious 1940's Latin dance anthem, 4:29. 5. I CANT BELIEVE IM NOT A MILLIONAIRE {SLOW} Very tongue in cheek, 4:31. 6. IT DONT MEAN A THING/IF IT AINT GOT THAT SWING {FAST} Duke Ellington would be proud! 4:50. 7. COULD IT BE MAGIC {SLOW} A sultry version of Barry Manilow's song, 3.33. 8. JILTED {SLOW} A sassy original composition by Ms Marcella Puppini: "I jumped through hoops to keep that man, oh how did I get it so wrong, I tried new positions, I learned his friends' names, I made myself sit through football games!" 5:37. 9. DONT SIT UNDER THE APPLE TREE {FAST} Finger clicking good! 2:51. 10. CRAZY IN LOVE {FAST} An awesome version of the Beyoncé smash hit, complete with violin solo! 3:38. 11. ITS NOT OVER/DEATH OR THE TOY PIANO {FAST} Catchy! 3:15. 12. AND SHE SANG {SLOW} A four-minute homage to the Fellini film genre, 4:16. 13. WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD {SLOW} The perfect way to finish the album, 4:03. To summarise, this vaudeville revivalist trio have done it again. I bought this album for CRAZY IN LOVE, and you'd be CRAZY not to LOVE this album! Utterly fabulous!
The Rise and Rise of the Puppini Sisters! March 12, 2008 H B Pensl (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've listened to this album a lot since I bought it. I bought it because I loved the first album and, after seeing them live in 'Borders' in London, I thought there really was something special about them; something different and exciting from the norm. So I was a little disappointed in reading some of the reviews about the second album - but I thought I'd give it a whirl; who knows, I might be surprised. I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews! This is a really good album! If you are not one to be hooked by the latest trends and enjoy trying something different; music with a great melody and a style and delivery that will put a smile on your face, then try this. I fail to see how the comments regarding sound quality have arisen and can only think that those making the comments must have had a duff CD. My album sounds crisp, bright and clear - everything you would expect from a quality recording. If you are not sure the Puppini Sisters' style of music is for you, there are plenty of free downloads. I recommend you listen to some of their work; and hope you enjoy this second album as much as I.
Sensational - even better than 'Betcha Bottom Dollar' January 19, 2008 Nickel (Kent, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just listen to the astonishing cover of "We have all the time in the world" - it's worth twice the price just for that track, and even beats the Louis Armstrong version. I saw Take That's live performance of "Could it be magic?" last year - theirs is workmanlike and poppy, the Puppinis' version is dramatic and sultry. Their own compositions - Soho nights, Jilted, Spooky - will be less familiar, but grow on you very rapidly. What are you waiting for? Buy it now!
Fantastic CD November 21, 2007 S. Wales (Birmingham, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was already a fan of the Puppini Sisters's first CD and they are an amazing live act. I think the new CD is excellent, with really memorable new songs like Jilted and Soho Nights, and you've got to hear their cover of Beyonce's Crazy In Love - brilliant. It's not as commercial as the first CD, but its a CD I have already listened to many many times, and I really hope they get the chance to make a 3rd CD soon! It also makes me laugh on a regular basis, and I'm making all my friends listen to it! Simon Wales, Birmingham
