Only The Faithful March 24, 2008 Rush K. Shukla (Uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Why do they release great albums and add to them songs that dont need to be there??? I always think it was great first time round. Anyway i have the original release with the original running order and what i made of it is exemplified in the majesty of songs like Salvation, "to all the kids doing lines, dont do it" sings Dolores with her voice more vibrant and earnest than ever. Its all present here with all her idiosyncracies and tics making her one of my favourite singers. Hollywood is a powerful opener and they unveil their new sound which is a brave step forward. The band match her all the way with improved playing and confidence as they stride through heavier material. Forever Yellow Skies is a real standout(possibly my fave cranberry!) as gorgeous Dolores takes it to another level with some execeptional vocal delivery injecting so much passion into this song; "Forever, i'll be forever holding you", she screams. The Rebels is so sublime and beautiful and you can hear a choir of angels in there as she really layers her voice to great effect. There are almost shades of Seal in her voice here. I shot John Lennon is another rocker they prove they can really kick it out when they want and the shots ringing out at the end still have the hairs stand on my neck to this day, you never quite know when they're coming! Electric Blue that follows is almost a eulogy and exudes more angelic hymnal textures and a beautiful guitar solo before a host of reflective songs draws this album out to Bosnia an epic and haunting piece so unique to their repertoire. I havent heard the add ons and dont care for them as these songs are great on their own as this album is where they really opened out their sound and have not rocked harder since. It really disappoints me all the negative critique this great album gets coz its my fave of theirs and shows you an artist can really move fwd and create something fresh rather than tread the same ol ground for the sake of nostalgics who are stuck in a timewarp. Embrace this and move on dears!
3rd offering from dolores and co September 22, 2007 Jamie Wright i totally love dolores o'riordans voice...and on this cd it is trully amazing....so raw!!! the guitars are roaring in some of the songs here!!and there are some gentle numberes aswell! the best song on the album is "when you are gone".
My favourite Cranberries album September 19, 2007 alextorres (Near Bristol, UK) The Cranberries were a band that I picked up on in the early 90s when I was doing a lot of driving on business from Gloucestershire up to the north of England. At the time Virgin radio had quite a good DJ (not Chris Jones, whose style I find obnoxious) in the evening and I would often listen to the show on the long drive up the M5/M6/M1. On the strength of listening to a song called "Salvation" I bought the band's third album "To The Faithful Departed" as my first purchase of theirs and it has remained my favourite despite then going to buy the first two and following up with further releases as they came out. "To The Faithful Departed" is a varied album, combining the band's hardest rock sounding songs with moments of pure pop brilliance and I think it was that mixture that appeals so much to me, particularly as the production team managed to somehow maintain a consistent soundscape thread throughout the various songs so that you don't feel as if you are listening to a compilation album: yes, the songs are very varied but overall they have a unified feel - always the mark of a good album! More so than on any other Cranberries album Dolores O'Riordan, the main songwriter, gives us plenty of conscience songs mixed up with the Cranberries's more usual fare of relationship subjects. "Salvation", the song I've already mentioned is a pacey rocker about the dangers of drugs; "War Child" an evocative song about the plight of children caught up in war and "Bosnia" a sweeping orchestral number about the dreadful war in the former Yugoslavia. "To the Faithful Departed" just falls short of being a perfect album for me. Its stunning opening sequence of five songs (the punchy "Hollywood", "Salvation", the infectious pop of "When You're Gone", the rocky "Free to Decide" and "War Child") is matched by an equally stunning sequence to finish the album (pop masterpieces "I'm Still Remembering", "Will You Remember?", the gorgeous "Joe" - possibly the highlight of the album - and "Bosnia") but the very high standard of these songs isn't matched by the intervening four, not for my taste anyway. Despite this reservation, the overall album is one of my very favourites. The remastered album contains many extra tracks (the original ends with "Bosnia") but I'm an old stick-in-the-mud and prefer to listen to favourite albums as I remember them, so I always stop there!

I could classify myself as a cranberries fan. I own three albums of theirs and also like the rest of their songs. This is certainly not a landmark album. I guess that their best albums are their first two: "Everybody else,...", but especially "No need to argue", which is the one I'd recommend if you had to have only one. As for this album, apart from the hit singles (Salvation, When You're Gone, Free to Decide ) my personal favourite is "Will You Remember?". The lyrics are quite melancholic and bittersweet. In my opinion this song is the album's best moment. Cordell is also a nice song, but then again... there are a lot of nice songs out there. Unless you're a Cranberries fan I wouldn't recommend this. There are so many masterpieces elsewhere.
Once more a GREAT album January 14, 2005 Ms. D. M. Szilvasy (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a huge but fairly new cranberries fan, this was one of the last albums of their's that I bought but WOW!The long intro on Hollywood is just superb and I shot John Lennon is great and the words soon stick in your head! Once more the Cranberries bring a vibrant set of songs that stay with you for days afterwards.
