Stunning Stuff March 27, 2008 David R. Bishop (Plymouth, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Valerie Simpson is better known as a songwriter/producer with her husband Nicholas Ashford, than she is as a singer, but boy oh boy what a great voice! Maybe the studio work siuted her more, than touring would have, as during their time at Motown, they were weekly commuters from New York to Detroit. Here you will find some excellent music. If you are a keen Motown fan, you may know Marvin and Tammi's or Diana Ross' version of some of these numbers. Valerie shows here that she could have given them all a run for their money. On the subject of Marvin & Tammi, Motown 'fessed up on their 'The Complete Duets' CD, that Valerie did the female lead on their third album 'Easy', as Tammi Terrell was sadly too ill to sing. It had been rumoured for decades. Back to this one, this is mature and considered music. Valerie could have fitted very well into the female singer/songwriter era of the early 70s lead by Carol King, but the albums this music comes from never took off. Perhaps it was lack of promotion, maybe it was not what people expected from Motown, but it is timeless and tasty stuff. Some of the lyrics are gospel/inspirational, and give you a special insight of Valerie Simpson. If you have any interest in 70s soul, or female singer/songwriters, then this album is truly the business!
The Power Behind the Throne... October 27, 2004 Graeme61 (Edinburgh, Scotland Great Britain) 38 out of 38 found this review helpful
Although I knew of her composing and producing for Tamla Motown, in partnership with her husband Nicholas Ashford, in the late '60's and early '70's, and the fantasic material the duo released on Warner Brothers at the end of the latter decade, until the release of this CD I was unaware that Valerie Simpson had released solo material on Motown. This CD is comprised of 2 complete LPs, originally released in 1971 and 1972, when the label was a force still to be reckoned with. Something being a success doesn't always denote it's quality and the inverse is also true, in spite of having all the right ingredients things occasionally don't reach the heights they should have, this CD is a good illustration of the latter. Valerie Simpson has a lovely and very versatile voice, these compositions (largely penned with Nicholas Ashford) are as good as anything else they wrote, why they didn't establish her as a star is anybodys guess...maybe it's because there's only ever room for 1 Queen at a record label at any given time. It makes you realise the generosity of a songwriter who gives their compositions to others when capable of turning out superior versions themselves. The sleevenotes for this CD include a contribution from Valerie Simpson who has also provided invaluable explanatory comments for a number of the tracks. If you're a fan of 1970's soul music you MUST buy this CD, you won't be disappointed.
