Amazon.co.uk Review Considered by many to be the Material Girl's most mature effort of the 1980s, Like a Prayer upped the ante of controversy with its gospel-infused title track and the singer's emotional confessions throughout. It also unveiled the hit "Express Yourself", which ushered in the era of Madonna as a "stainless steel sexual icon". Musically, Prayer showcased her burgeoning songwriting prowess, with the beautiful "Oh Father" and the perky pop of "Cherish". Besides a throw-away collaboration with Prince ("This Is Not a Love Song"), the album stands as one of her strongest works, eschewing the strong dance beat influences from her past--she saved that for the remixes--and concentrating instead on melody and structure. Like a Prayer also gave a hint of things to come with the delightful "Dear Jessie" displaying a maternal side worthy of her name. --Steve Gdula

Madonna-Like A Prayer March 31, 2008 M. Barnes (England) I suppose this is one of those albums that everyone remembers, what with the title track being a global triumph. There are a lot of tracks on it that I absolutely love, and that I constantly play over and over. However, I have given it four stars rather than five (for the same reasons as my review for 'True Blue') because there are some songs that I find to be unnecessary, which could have been replaced with much better songs, like the 'Supernatural' b-side on the 'Cherish' single. That is it though, that one little exception that makes this album not be perfect for me, but otherwise, I think it is an incredible masterpiece. I can definately understand why so many people would call it their favourite Madonna album, although it's not mine. My personal ratings: Like A Prayer - 5/5 Express Yourself - 5/5 Love Song - 1/5 Till Death Do Us Part - 3/5 Promise To Try - 4/5 Cherish - 4/5 Dear Jessie - 3/5 Oh Father - 4/5 Keep It Together - 5/5 Pray For Spanish Eyes - 4/5 Act Of Contrition - 1/5
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! March 30, 2008 S. J. Pinder (Cornwall,UK) THERE IS NO ALBUM QUITE LIKE THIS ONE,FILLED WITH GREAT POWER BALLADS AND CONTAINS TWO OF MY FAVORITE MADGE SONGS-EXPRESS YOURSELF AND OH FATHER-BUT LIKE A PRAYER IS STILL A GEM, AS IS DEAR JESSIE THAT SEEMS LIKE A RANDOM TRACK AMONGST ALL OF THE BALLADS/AS WITH CHERISH, IF ONLY VOGUE WAS ON HERE!!!!!! Like A Prayer-10+*/10-fantastic song that made her reign supreme. Express Yourself-10+/10-great!!! Love Song-9/10-fab duet with Prince Til Death Do Us Part-10/10-love it soooo much/fantastic song. Promise To Try-9/10-Maddie reflecting on her past/very powerful. Cherish-9/10-awesome song with a majestically tuned beat. Oh Father-10+/10-another one of my favourites. Dear Jessie-7/10-very random track and extremely light hearted. Keep it Together-10+/10-awesome/spectacular/amazing are the words to describe this song. Spanish Eyes-9/10-a great ballad. act of contrition-7/10 a strange way to end the album and its conclusion makes me jump(WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS NOT IN THE COMPUTER!!!?). great album!!!!
Good album, dreadful sound July 27, 2007 Jarle L. Nyvoll (RANDABERG Norway) The remastering of Madonna's older albums seems to have stopped after True Blue. Like A Prayer has many great tracks, Pray For Spanish Eyes and Dear Jessie being favourites of mine. But the CD sounds tinny and dreadful. Could someone please tell us whether Warner Bros plan to remaster more of Madonna's albums? This would be a great starting point.
Dear Jesse July 6, 2007 Dana Nani (San Francisco, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i just got to hear Dear Jesse, but immediately fell in love with it! Why didn't they release this in the US? Stupid if you ask me...OWELL! Got some info about the origin of the song...Madonna wrote this with Patrick Leonard, who collaborated with her on several of her '80s hits. The song is a Pop lullaby which displays Madonna's maternal side. It was written for Patrick Leonard's daughter, Jessie.
